You cleaned it up properly at the time. You scrubbed, you sprayed, and the smell went away. Then the first properly sticky week of the season rolls in, and suddenly the spare room (or the corner behind the lounge, or the rug by the back door) smells like the dog all over again.
If that sounds familiar, you’re in good company. In homes from Bucasia and Shoal Point to Eimeo and Blacks Beach, this is one of the most common things people mention when they call me as the humidity climbs. Here’s what’s actually going on, what to do the next time an accident happens, and how to get rid of the smell for good rather than covering it up.
What happens when pet urine dries in carpet
When a dog or cat has an accident on the carpet, the liquid doesn’t stay on top. It soaks down through the fibres and very often into the underlay underneath. As it dries, the water evaporates, but what’s left behind doesn’t. Dried urine leaves behind concentrated salts, or crystals, deep in the carpet backing and the padding below.
In the dry months those crystals mostly sit quietly. That’s why a spot can seem completely fine from June to September.
Why the smell wakes up when it’s humid
Those leftover crystals attract moisture. When the air in Mackay gets thick and muggy, they draw water back out of the air and the smell starts coming off them again. It’s the same reason the smell can come back after you’ve mopped near the spot, shampooed the carpet yourself, or had a wet towel dropped on it.
So if you’ve got a spot that “only smells when it’s muggy”, it isn’t your imagination and it doesn’t mean you didn’t clean it properly. It usually means the source is still down there.
Why deodorisers only mask it
Most supermarket sprays and powders are built to make a room smell nicer for a while, not to deal with what’s in the underlay. They sit on the surface and add a fragrance over the top. Once that fragrance fades, and especially once the humidity rises again, the original smell is still there.
There’s another catch. If your pet can still smell their old spot, they may be tempted to go there again. Covering the smell for human noses doesn’t fix that.
What to do in the first 10 minutes after an accident
The faster you get to a fresh accident, the less ends up in the underlay. Here’s what I’d do:
- Blot, don’t rub. Grab paper towel or an old white towel and press down firmly to soak up as much as you can. Rubbing just spreads it and pushes it deeper.
- Keep blotting with fresh towels until you’re barely picking anything up. Standing on the towel helps.
- Rinse lightly with cool water. A small splash of cool water, then blot again. Don’t flood the spot; too much water pushes urine further into the underlay.
- Skip the hot water and steam. Heat can make the stain and smell harder to shift.
- Avoid ammonia-based cleaners. Ammonia smells a lot like urine to a pet and can encourage them to go there again.
- Get air onto it. Point a fan at the spot or run the air-con on dry mode. In our climate, a damp patch left under a rug or furniture is asking for a musty smell.
- Take note of the spot. If it’s had more than one accident, or it starts smelling again in a few weeks, that’s worth telling us about.
This won’t always get every bit out, especially on thick carpet or an older accident, but it gives you the best start.
How P.U.R.T.® treats the source
When a smell keeps coming back, it’s time to go after what’s underneath. Chem-Dry’s P.U.R.T.® (Pet Urine Removal Treatment) is a patented treatment designed for exactly this. According to Chem-Dry, it breaks up the urine crystals and the enzymes behind the smell, instead of masking them.
P.U.R.T.® works alongside our Hot Carbonating Extraction clean, which uses up to 80% less water than typical steam cleaning. Less water matters in the tropics: carpets are typically dry in 1–2 hours, so you’re not left with soggy carpet sitting in the humidity. We can treat a single spot, a few spots or several rooms in one visit.
Our main cleaner, The Natural®, has no soaps, detergents or fragrances, so there’s no perfume left behind to cover anything up and no sticky residue to attract dirt. I’ll let you know when it’s fine to let the dog, the cat and the kids back on the floor.
How well it works depends on how deep the urine has soaked and how long it’s been there, so I’ll always talk it through with you honestly before we start. Rugs and lounges can be treated too, and we clean rugs right there in your home.
Tell Craig how many spots
Every pet smell job is a bit different, so the easiest thing is to give me a call and describe it. It helps if you can tell me:
- Dog or cat, and roughly how many spots
- How long they’ve been there, and whether the same spot gets used again and again
- Whether it’s carpet, a rug or a lounge
- What you’ve already tried
Pre-Christmas offer: get 10% off when your clean is booked and completed by Saturday 19 December 2026. It’s a good time to get the pet spots sorted before the house fills up with visitors.
I’m Craig, the owner of Chem-Dry Advantage. We’re locally owned and operated, and when you call, you’re talking to me, not a call centre. We come to you across Mackay and the northern beaches (Bucasia, Shoal Point, Eimeo, Blacks Beach and beyond), from Sarina in the south up to Airlie Beach and Cannonvale, and about 50 km inland.
