If you’ve lived between Sarina and Airlie Beach for more than one summer, you know the feeling. The air turns thick and sticky, the afternoon storms build over the Pioneer Valley and the Clarke Range, and one morning you walk into the lounge room and notice it: a faint, damp, "something’s not right" smell coming off the carpet.
It’s not your imagination, and it doesn’t mean your home is dirty. Carpet and tropical humidity just don’t get along. The good news is that a few simple habits go a long way, and when they’re not enough, there’s a clean that doesn’t leave your carpet wet for days.
Here’s what I tell locals from Mackay to the Whitsundays as the wet season gets closer.
Why carpets get musty in a Mackay wet season
Humidity stops carpet from drying out
Carpet fibres and the underlay beneath them hold onto moisture. In a dry climate that moisture leaves quickly. On a muggy afternoon in Mackay or Cannonvale, when the air is already full of water, it hangs around. A spilt drink, a wet towel dropped on the floor or a mopped tile edge that crept onto the rug has nowhere to go.
Beach sand, cane dust and wet-season mud feed the problem
Between swims at Harbour Beach, Bucasia or Sarina Beach, weekends on the boat out of Abell Point Marina, footy training on soggy ovals and muddy paws from the backyard, a lot of grit ends up in our carpets. Out towards Walkerston and the cane country, dust gets in too. That grit settles deep in the pile, holds moisture and gives odours something to cling to. A quick vacuum picks up the surface, but not what’s packed down low.
Old spills and pet accidents come back to life
Here’s one a lot of people don’t expect. A pet accident from months ago can seem fine all through the dry season, then start smelling again once the humidity climbs. Moisture in the air reactivates what’s left in the carpet and underlay. If there’s a spot that "only smells when it’s muggy", that’s usually why.
Holiday units and rentals cop it twice
In Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays, holiday apartments get summer guests coming and going with wet swimmers, sunscreen and sand, and the unit is often closed up between stays. Closed-up rooms plus humidity is exactly when that musty smell takes hold.
Seven simple ways to keep your carpets fresh this wet season
You don’t need fancy gear for most of this. It’s about keeping moisture down and dirt out.
- Keep the air moving. Ceiling fans, pedestal fans and air-con on dry mode all help. Even an hour or two in the afternoon makes a difference.
- Open up when it’s fine. On the clearer days between storms, open windows and doors on both sides of the house to get the sea breeze through.
- Put a mat at every door. A decent outdoor mat and an indoor one stop a surprising amount of sand and mud before it reaches the carpet. Shake them out often.
- Shoes off at the door. Especially after the beach, the boat or the footy.
- Deal with spills straight away. Blot (don’t rub) with a clean white towel, then get air onto the spot. Don’t leave wet patches under furniture or rugs.
- Vacuum more often in summer. Getting grit out regularly leaves less for moisture and odours to hang onto. Go slowly over hallways and other high-traffic areas.
- Don’t leave wet things on the floor. Wet towels, swimmers, school bags after a downpour: hang them up, not on the carpet.
When storm water gets into the carpet
Wet-season storms around Mackay and the Whitsundays can push water in under doors, through windows or from a burst hose or overflowing washing machine. If that happens:
- Stay safe first. Keep clear of power points and appliances near the water. If it’s flood water, treat it as dirty.
- Take photos before you move anything, in case you need to make an insurance claim.
- Get the water out fast. The longer carpet and underlay stay soaked in this weather, the harder they are to save.
Chem-Dry Advantage can help with water extraction from carpets, pulling the water out so the drying can start. If the water has caused problems underneath, such as damage to the subfloor or walls, we refer those repairs to a partner company we work with, so you’re not left trying to find someone in a hurry.
Why does my carpet or rug smell after it gets wet?
That wet carpet smell comes from moisture trapped in the backing and underlay. When carpet or a rug stays damp, bacteria and mould start to grow underneath, and that’s what you’re smelling. In Mackay’s humid wet season the air can’t pull the moisture out quickly, so the smell builds faster and hangs around longer.
Stopping a wet carpet musty smell in the first day or two
- Lift the water out. Soak up as much as you can with towels, pressing down firmly, and keep going until they come up barely damp.
- Get the air moving. Open windows when it’s not raining, run fans across the wet area and use the air-con to take moisture out of the room.
- Don’t leave rugs folded or on wet floors. Lay a damp rug flat somewhere dry with air underneath, so the backing isn’t trapping moisture against the floor.
When the smell means it’s time for a professional clean
If the smell is still there once everything feels dry, or it comes back on muggy days, the moisture has reached the backing and underlay. That’s when a professional clean helps. Our process uses up to 80% less water and no soaps or detergents, so nothing sticky is left behind, and we use a HEPA vacuum first. If pets are part of the problem, see our guide to pet smells in humid weather.
Rugs are cleaned at your place
Our rug cleaning is done at your home, so there’s no need to roll up a damp rug and cart it anywhere.

When it’s time for a professional clean
Good habits help, but they won’t shift the dirt, oils and odour that build up deep in the pile. Signs it’s time to book:
- A musty or "wet dog" smell that hangs around even after you’ve aired the house
- Spots that smell worse on muggy days
- Grey or flattened traffic lanes in the hallway or lounge
- It’s been six months or more since your last clean, and there are kids, pets or someone with allergies at home
Why a low-moisture clean suits the tropics
In our climate the cleaning method really matters. Typical steam cleaning puts a lot of water into your carpet, and in a humid summer that water can take a long time to leave. Damp carpet is exactly what you’re trying to avoid.
Chem-Dry works differently. Our Hot Carbonating Extraction process uses carbonation to lift dirt from deep in the carpet fibres, and it uses up to 80% less water than typical steam cleaning. Less water in means faster drying: carpets are typically dry in 1–2 hours, not a day or two. Running a fan or the air-con afterwards helps it along.
Our main cleaner, The Natural®, contains no soaps, detergents or fragrances, so there’s no sticky residue left behind to attract dirt. It carries EPA Safer Choice and ECOLOGO certifications, which makes it a good fit for homes with kids and pets.
Got a pet smell that keeps coming back?
If the musty smell is really an old pet accident waking up in the humidity, a regular clean on its own may not fix it. Chem-Dry’s P.U.R.T.® (Pet Urine Removal Treatment) goes after the urine crystals in the carpet and underlay that cause the smell, rather than covering it up.
